چکیده

Using a simple stochastic growth model, this paper demonstrates that the coefficient of variation of aggregate output or GDP does not necessarily go to zero even if the number of sectors or economic agents goes to infinity. This phenomenon known as non-self-averaging implies that even if the number of economic agents is large, dispersion can remain significant, and, therefore, that we can not legitimately focus on the means of aggregate variables. It, in turn, means that the standard microeconomic foundations based on the representative agent has little value for they are expected to provide us with accurate dynamics of the means of aggregate variables. The paper also shows that non-self-averaging emerges in some representative urn models. It suggests that non-self-averaging is not pathological but quite generic. Thus, contrary to the main stream view, micro-founded macroeconomics such as a dynamic general equilibrium model does not provide solid micro foundations. JEL: C02, E10, E32, O40

Examples of Macroeconomic and Non-Economic Dynamic Models That are Not Self Averaging

This paper describes examples of non-self averaging phenomena drawn from macroeconomic and physics fields. They are models of random clusters, such as Poisson-Dirichlet models, urn models, and models of random transport through disordered media. In particular, we discuss several three-parameter extension of the two parameter Poisson-Dirichlet model. These three parameter models inherit non-self...

Information, Stickey Prices and Macroeconomic Foundations

5izor decades. macroeconomists have us~fntened to criticism from their professional I colleagues about the absence of microfoundations from most of what they say and do. A typical comment is: “I don’t understand much about macroeconomics; how is it related to economics?” A possibly less-frivolous comment is that nothing can be said about macroeconomic policy until economists develop a macroecon...

Teaching Modern Macroeconomics at the Principles Level

Ideas taught at the macroeconomics principles level should satisfy two goals. First, they should be simple enough to be both understandable and memorable for the beginning student. Second, they should be consistent both with the modern economy and with the macroeconomic models of this economy that are used in practice for policy evaluation. There is no necessary conflict between these two goals...

The Microfoundations of Macroeconomics

We consider the microfoundations controversy from the perspective of economic evolution and show that the debate can benefit from lessons learned in evolutionary biology. Although the analogy between biology and economics has been noted before, it has rarely focused on clarifying the micro-macro distinction in economic theory and modelling. The macroevolution controversy in biology has generate...
